O álbum Live at Northsea Jazz Festival 1981, da banda de jazz sueca Salamander foi relançado na noite da última sexta, 20 de outubro, em Estocolmo. Próxima festa de relançamento ocorrerá em Göteborg no dia 17 de novembro.

Lançado há 36 anos, o álbum Live at Northsea Jazz Festival, foi relançado oficialmente na noite do dia 20 em Estocolmo. Haverá outra festa de relançamento marcada para o dia 17 de novembro na cidade natal da banda Göteborg. Em ambos os eventos o Cecília Wennerström New Quartet, atual banda da saxofonista Cecília Wennerström, membro fundadora da Salamander, se apresenta tocando músicas do álbum.
A Salamander ganhou destaque pelo excelente jazz feito e por se tratar de um quinteto composto por 4 mulheres e 1 homem. Dessa forma, tratava-se de uma banda de jazz feminina, o que a credenciou a participar em 1981 do KC Women’s Jazz Festival , festival de jazz realizado em Kansas City destinado à jazzistas do gênero feminino. A Salamander fazia um som bastante livre, difícil de ser classificado, mas certamente influenciado pelo free jazz e fusion. A apresentação da banda no KC Women´s Jazz Festival, chamou tanto a atenção da crítica que mereceu uma resenha elogiosa do renomado crítico de jazz Leonard Feather para o Los Angeles Times.
O sucesso da Salamander foi tanto nesse período que em julho de 1981 a banda foi convidada para participar do Northsea Jazz Festival. Este concerto fantástico foi gravado e lançado no mesmo ano pelo selo Dragon Records. Desde então o registro ao vivo da Salamander no Northsea Festival não foi relançado e o álbum tornou-se uma relíquia, de posse de poucos privilegiados que adquiriram o álbum em 81. Por incrível que pareça, não há nem mesmo a disponibilidade do álbum na internet, seja em plataformas de streaming (Youtube, Spotfy, etc) ou programas de compartilhamento de arquivos como o soulseek.
O empenho de Cecilia Wennerström para que essa obra recebesse o devido tratamento para que fosse relançada e torna-se acessível às novas gerações de jazzistas e amantes do jazz merece toda nosso respeito e admiração. Estamos diante de uma pessoa que vê a música como um fim em si, não como meio para alcançar objetivos menores como riqueza e bajulações. Para que o lançamento fosse possível Cecília criou seu próprio selo o Wela Records.
Conversamos com Cecília sobre suas impressões, expectativas e sentimento acerca desse relançamento. Segue abaixo a fala da saxofonista sobre o relançamento:
Carlim/ Oganpazan: O que significa para você relançar o Live at Northsea Jazz Festival 36 anos após a versão original, agora para seu próprio rótulo? Quão importante é para você e para o jazz em geral?
Cecília Wennestöm: O relançamento da Salamandra / Live no Northsea Jazz Festival de 1981 significa muito para mim por vários motivos. Eu ainda era inexperiente como música e também como uma líder de banda quando a Salamander teve seu impacto. Fiz o meu melhor para lidar com o sucesso inesperado. Nem todos ficaram satisfeitos com este sucesso, e a pergunta: “nós obtivemos todos esses shows apenas porque nós éramos mulheres” estava mais uma vez pendurado no ar. Em entrevistas, sempre tive que responder a pergunta ligeiramente acusadora: “por que você começou um grupo de jazz feminino”? Isso pode ser difícil de acreditar para as gerações mais jovens, penso, pelo menos na Suécia. No entanto, o que é que permanece hoje, 36 anos depois, quando toda repercussão na imprensa, especulações, contradições, invejas, análises (resenhas), turnês e assim por diante, após tanto tempo sem um relançamento? É a música. Esta é a música que fizemos em 1981, e é emocionante, bem executada, bem ensaiada, criativa e simplesmente muito boa.
Na minha opinião, o fato da Salamander ser um capítulo da história internacional sobre instrumentistas de jazz feminino não é suficiente na Suécia. Hoje muito mais mulheres na Suécia tocam jazz e tocam muito bem. Eles merecem ouvir as mulheres que escreveram um dos primeiros capítulos na história de instrumentistas de jazz feminino. Então, estou orgulhoso de abrir essa possibilidade ao lançar este CD com meu próprio selo Wela Records / Plugged.
Quanto ao jazz em geral … Primeiro: na minha opinião, Susanna Lindeborg é compositora e compositora de piano de nível mundial. Então, pelo menos, uma pessoa na Salamander deveria, na minha opinião, pertencer ao grande salão de jazz da fama. Em segundo lugar: o jazz de hoje é muitas vezes tecnicamente brilhante e, ao mesmo tempo, mais uniforme. Meu coração está mais com a música mais antiga, como, por exemplo, as sessões de big band de Gil Evans com Miles Davis. Eu acho que estou antiquada. Eu gosto de personalidade e chance (quando combinado com virtuosismo) mais do que eu gosto de perfeição. A música da Salamander realmente teve personalidade e, portanto, o CD é uma pequena contribuição para essa maneira de olhar a música.
Pra vocês que estão pela Europa, ainda dá pra marcar presença na festa de relançamento dessa obra fundamental para o jazz que acontecera em Göteborg no dia 17 de novembro. Estarão presentes para uma jam session histórica membros originais da Salamander. Além da band leader e anfitriã da festa Cecília Wennerström (Sax Tenor), estarão presentes a vocalista Katarina Karlsson, a pianista Susanna Lindeborg o baixista Stig Bostrom e a baterista Vanja Holm. Será um reencontro especial e certamente renderá uma noite inesquecível de puro jazz.

Released 16 years ago, the album Live at Northsea Jazz Festival was officially relaunched on the night of 20th in Stockholm. There will be another re-launch party scheduled for November 17 in the hometown of the band Göteborg. In both events the Cecília Wennerström New Quartet, current band of the saxophonist Cecília Wennerström, founding member of Salamander, presents / displays playing songs of the album.
The Salamander gained prominence by the excellent jazz made and for being a quintet composed by 4 women and 1 man. Thus, it was a female jazz band, which accredited her to participate in 1981 at the KC Women’s Jazz Festival, a jazz festival held in Kansas City for female jazz. Salamander made a fairly free sound, difficult to be classified but certainly influenced by free jazz and fusion. The band’s presentation at the KC Women’s Jazz Festival drew so much attention from critics that it earned a complimentary review by renowned jazz critic Leonard Feather for the Los Angeles Times.
The success of Salamander was so much in that period that in July of 1981 the band was invited to participate in the Northsea Jazz Festival. This fantastic concert was recorded and released the same year by the label Dragon Records. Since then the Salamander live record at the Northsea Festival has not been reissued and the album has become a relic, owned by the few privileged who acquired the album in ’81. Strangely enough, there is not even the availability of the album on the internet , either on streaming platforms (Youtube, Spotfy, etc.) or file-sharing programs such as soulseek.
Cecilia Wennerström’s commitment to have the right treatment to be re-launched and made accessible to the new generation of jazz and jazz lovers deserves our respect and admiration. We are faced with a person who sees music as an end in itself, not as a means to achieve smaller goals such as wealth and flattery. For the release to be possible Cecilia created her own label Wela Records.
We talked with Cecilia about her impressions, expectations and feelings about this relaunch. Below is the saxophonist’s talk about the relaunch:
Carlim / Oganpazan: What does it mean for you to relaunch the Live at Northsea Jazz Festival 36 years after the original version, now for your own label? How important is it to you and to jazz in general?
Cecília Wennestöm: Relaunching Salamander/Live at Northsea Jazz Festival from 1981 means a lot to me for several reasons. I was unexperienced as a musician and a band leader when Salamander had its break-through and I did my best to cope with the unexpected success. Not everyone was pleased about this success, and the question: ”did we get all these gigs just because we were women” was more than once hanging in the air. In interviews I always had to answer the slightly accusing question: ”why did you start a women’s jazz group”. This might be hard to believe for younger generations, I think, at least in Sweden. However, what is it that remains today, 36 years later, when all press, speculations, contradictions, envy, reviews, touring and so on is long gone? It is the music. This is the music we made in 1981, and it is exciting, well performed, well rehearsed, creative and simply very good.
In my opinion, the fact that Salamander is a chapter in the international story about female jazz instrumentalists is not enough acknowledged in Sweden. Today many more women in Sweden play jazz and they play very good. They deserve to listen to the women who wrote one of the earliest chapters in the story of female jazz instrumentalists. So I am proud to open that possibility by releasing this CD om my own label Wela Records/Plugged.
As for jazz in general … First: in my opinion Susanna Lindeborg is a world class piano player and composer. So at least one person in Salamander should in my opinion belong to the great jazz hall of fame. Secondly: Today’s jazz is often technically brilliant and at the same time more uniform. My heart is more with the older music, like for instance Gil Evans big band sessions with Miles Davis. I guess I am old-fashioned. I like personality and chance (when combined with virtuosity) more than I like perfection. Salamander’s music indeed had personality and so the CD is a small contribution to this way of looking at music.
For those of you in Europe, you can still attend the party to relaunch this fundamental work for jazz that took place in Göteborg on 17 November. Will be present for a historic jam session members of the original Salamander. Besides the band leader and host of the party Cecilia Wennerström (Sax Tenor), will be present the vocalist Katarina Karlsson, the pianist Susanna Lindeborg the bassist Stig Bostrom and the drummer Vanja Holm. It will be a special reunion and certainly will yield an unforgettable night of pure jazz.
